The quest for net zero steel
· Most steel around the world is produced from rocks of iron ore. In the majority of steel making plants, iron is extracted from iron ore in a blast furnace. The furnace heats coking coal to around 1,100 degrees centigrade to produce coke and carbon monoxide. This reacts with the heated ore and oxygen to form pig iron and carbon dioxide.
