Burnt Mill was first called the OK Mill (processing ore from the OK Mine described earlier), then the Gold Basin Mill. It burned down twice, once in 1892, then again in 1906. It had opened as a fivestamp mill to process the ore from the Eldorado, OK, and other Gold Basin mines. One source states it had ten stamps and a cyanide plant until 1906.
The original 40stamp Mammoth Pan Mill was built in 187879 outside of Mammoth Lakes, California. It was only used during Mammoth's brief gold mining boom and abandoned in the early 1880s. It lay derelict until it was burnt by the Forest Service in 1929, a short time after this handcolored photo (now in the Gene Autry Museum) was made.

The Stamp Mill method of extracting gold was very commonly used in the Kern River Valley and they varied from 1 to 80 stamps. Gold bearing ore was fed into a hopper as the stamp moved up and down, crushing the ore. We also have a full sized Stamp Mill in our backyard.
