The soft stone was often covered with a plaster layer and then painted while the harder stone was often left natural and chosen for its colour in relation to use. Black rocks referred to the lifegiving silt of the Nile. Because they were black they were used for art relating to lifegiving situations, like Osiris, the god of resurrection.
